The Ranks of Registered Nurses is Growing

The registered nurse workforce swelled to nearly 3.1 million, as of March 2008, up more than 5% since 2004, according to a newly released report from the Health Resources and Services Administration, a federal agency charged with improving access to healthcare for vulnerable populations.

Published every four years, the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses (PDF) examines nurses’ demographic patterns and employment trends for use in policymaking and analysis. Among the findings from this year’s report was a critical shortage of nursing faculty, which researchers predict will continue to hinder schools’ ability to “restock the pool” of registered nurses. Of current nursing faculty, 60% are age 50 or older, according to the report.
